Understanding Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals who qualify due to disability or specific medical conditions. Medicare can seem complicated at first, but understanding the basics makes it easier to make informed decisions about your coverage.

The Basics of Medicare

Medicare is divided into different parts:

  • Part A – Hospital Insurance: Helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care, hospice, and certain home health services.

  • Part B – Medical Insurance: Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab work, and other medically necessary services.

  • Part C – Medicare Advantage: An alternative to Original Medicare offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. Plans generally include Part A and Part B benefits and may include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits.

  • Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage: Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

  • Medigap – Medicare Supplement Insurance: Private insurance that can help pay certain out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare.

Your Medicare Choices

One of the most important decisions you'll make is choosing how you receive your Medicare coverage. You may choose Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and consider adding a Part D prescription drug plan and/or Medigap policy, or you may choose a Medicare Advantage plan that provides your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company. There is no single option that is right for everyone. Your healthcare needs, prescriptions, doctors, budget, and available plans in your area can all play a role in your decision.
