Understanding Medicare Supplement Plans (aLSO KNOW AS Medigap)
Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap, is private insurance designed to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn't fully cover. Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare and can help make healthcare expenses more predictable.
Medigap Plan Options
Medigap plans are standardized by letter. Depending on your eligibility and location, available options may include:
A • B • C • D • F • G • K • L • M • N
Some plans are also available in high-deductible versions, including High-Deductible Plan F and High-Deductible Plan G.
Important: Plans C and F generally aren't available to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.
What Can a Medigap plan Help Cover?
Depending on the plan, Medigap may help pay for:
🏥 Part A hospital coinsurance and costs
👨⚕️ Part B coinsurance or copayments
💵 Certain Medicare deductibles
🏥 Extended hospital costs
🌎 Certain foreign travel emergency expenses
What a Medigap PLAN Doesn't Cover
Medigap generally does not cover:
Prescription drugs
Routine dental
Routine vision
Hearing aids
Long-term care
If you choose Original Medicare and Medigap, you may also want to consider a separate Part D prescription drug plan.
Plan G & Plan N
Plan G offers broad coverage and is one of the most popular Medigap options. It generally covers Medicare-approved cost-sharing except for the Part B deductible.
Plan N can have a lower premium than Plan G but generally requires certain co-payments and may have additional out-of-pocket costs.
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period
Your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period generally begins when you're 65 or older and enrolled in Part B.
This period provides important protections when purchasing a Medigap policy and is an important time to compare your options.
