Understanding Vision Coverage
Good vision care is an important part of maintaining your overall health and quality of life. Original Medicare generally does not cover routine eye exams for glasses or contact lenses, and it generally does not cover eyeglasses or contact lenses, although Medicare does cover certain medically necessary eye services and exams.
Medicare beneficiaries may have access to routine vision benefits through certain Medicare Advantage plans or standalone vision insurance plans.
What Vision Coverage May Include
Depending on the plan, vision coverage may help with:
👁️ Routine eye exams
👓 Eyeglasses and lenses
👁️ Contact lenses
🕶️ Lens options and coatings
💰 Allowances toward frames or contacts
🩺 Certain additional eye-care services
Coverage, allowances, provider networks, frequency of benefits, and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan.
Medicare Advantage Vision Benefits
Many Medicare Advantage plans include routine vision benefits as part of their supplemental benefits. However, the amount and type of coverage can vary significantly from one plan to another.
When comparing plans, consider:
Routine eye exam coverage
Eyeglass or contact lens allowances
Frequency of covered exams and eye wear
Provider networks
Co-pays and coinsurance
Covered lens options
Additional vision benefits
A vision benefit included with a Medicare Advantage plan may not provide the same level of coverage as a standalone vision insurance plan.
Standalone Vision Insurance
If your Medicare Advantage plan doesn't provide the vision coverage you need—or if you have Original Medicare—you may consider a standalone vision insurance plan. Standalone vision plans can provide additional coverage for routine exams, eye wear, and other covered vision services, depending on the policy.
What Should You Compare?
Don't look at the monthly premium alone. Consider:
Your eye doctor: Is your preferred provider in-network?
Eye exams: How often are exams covered?
Eye wear allowance: How much is available for frames, lenses, or contacts?
Frequency: How often can you receive covered eye wear?
Out-of-pocket costs: What will you pay for exams and eye wear?
Lens options: Are upgrades or specialty lenses covered?
