Understanding Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. These plans provide your Part A and Part B benefits through the private plan, and most include Part D prescription drug coverage.
Key Benefits
Many Medicare Advantage plans may include additional benefits such as:
🏥 Hospital & medical coverage
💊 Prescription drug coverage
🦷 Dental benefits
👁️ Vision benefits
👂 Hearing benefits
💪 Fitness & wellness benefits
🚗 Transportation or other supplemental benefits
Plans also have an annual maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered Medicare medical services, providing financial protection if you have significant healthcare expenses.
What Should You Compare?
Every plan is different. Before enrolling, consider:
Doctors & hospitals: Are your providers in-network?
Prescriptions: Are your medications covered and affordable?
Costs: What are the premiums, copays, deductibles, and maximum out-of-pocket?
Benefits: Which additional benefits are important to you?
Plan rules: Are referrals or prior authorizations required?
Plans, benefits, networks, and costs can change each year.
When Can You Enroll?
Medicare Advantage enrollment may be available during your:
Initial Enrollment Period when you first become eligible for Medicare.
Annual Enrollment Period: October 15–December 7.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: January 1–March 31, if you're already enrolled in Medicare Advantage.
Special Enrollment Period, if you qualify due to certain life events.
